AVOID RALLIES, FOREIGNERS TOLD

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) again cautioned foreign tourists against taking part in tomorrow’s Luneta rally and other future demonstrations against the pork barrel system.

In a statement, BI Officer-in-Charge Siegfred Mison said avoiding these rallies is the most prudent thing for foreigners to do so they would not be held liable for violating the country’s immigration laws.

Mison reiterated that tourist visa holders should join these protest actions for it would violate the conditions of their admission and stay as temporary visitors in the country.

“As much as possible we do not want a repeat of the incidents wherein we deported two foreigners for joining the anti-SONA rally,” the BI chief said.

He clarified that the BI was only doing its job to implement the law when it deported the two foreigners who were spotted at the rally near the Batasan in July.

Mison thus appealed to foreigners to stay out of the rallies so they would not encounter problems during their stay in the country.

He stressed that it has always been the BI’s policy to welcome foreign visitors provided they respect and do not violate the country’s laws.

Last week, the BI deported Canadian student Kim Chatillon-Meunier, who had been placed on the BI watch list for joining the anti-SONA rally.

Another foreign activist, Dutchman Thomas van Beersum, was deported last August also for joining the said mass action.
