2 Pinays who hid visas in tissue paper held at Cebu

            Immigration officers at the international airport in Cebu intercepted two suspected human trafficking victims as they attempted to leave with their visas and tickets hidden inside a tissue paper.
 
            Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. disclosed that the two female passengers were apprehended last April 3 before they could board a Philipine Airlines Express flight to Hongkong.
 
            David said the passengers initially claimed they would be vacationing in Hongkong but later admitted that they are undocumented overseas workers bound for Korea and Jordan.
 
            He added that both women did not have the required permits to work abroad from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration.

BI gets biometrics equipment from US gov’t

           The United States government has donated to the Bureau of Immigration (BI) two state-of-the-art biometrics equipment to help bolster the agency’s capability to catch foreign fugitives and other illegal aliens.

            BI Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. formally accepted the equipment from US Ambassador Harry Thomas in a simple ceremony at the US embassy in Manila last Thursday.

            David thanked Thomas and the US government for their unwavering support to the BI’s campaign to upgrade its facilities and enchance its ability to enforce immigration laws.

            Thomas, for his part, promised to strengthen the partnership between the BI and US government in the global effort against human trafficking and transnational crimes.

BI on lookout for Pagadian mayor

            The Bureau of Immigration (BI) placed on Friday on its lookout list Pagadian City Mayor Samuel Co who was charged with estafa for alleged involvement in a pyramid investment scam involving Aman Futures Inc. 

            BI Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. said he issued a lookout bulletin against Co to prevent him from leaving the country following the issuance of an arrest warrant against the mayor.

            Justice Secretary Leila de Lima reportedly informed David that a warrant for Co’s arrest was issued by the court.

            David instructed immigration officers in all the airports and seaports to apprehend Co if he attempts to leave and turn him over to the custody of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

David vows to purge NAIA of corrupt BI men

            Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. vowed to purge the airport of corrupt immigration personnel as he relieved another BI employee at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) for allegedly allowing the entry of a blacklisted foreigner.

            David said he recalled Alden Yap Bait to the main office upon learning that the latter aided Taiwanese Wu Chun Yung in entering the country despite his being in the bureau’s blacklist.

            “There will be no letup in our efforts to remove the bad eggs in our our ranks,” the BI chief declared, adding that administrative and criminal charges will be filed against Bait if investigation finds him liable for the entry of the Taiwanese.

             CCTV cameras at the airport allegedly caught footages of the Taiwanese being escorted by Bait upon his arrival at the NAIA last April 7.

BI opens Cebu satellite office

            The Bureau of Immigration (BI) opened last Thursday its new satellite office in Cebu to bring the agency’s services closer to foreigners staying in the country’s second largest metropolis.

            BI Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. joined Cebu local officials and civic and business leaders there in inaugurating the new office inside the Gaisano shopping mall in Lapu-Lapu City , Mactan Island.

            David said the satellite office was in answer to the clamor of local officials and foreign chambers in Cebu for the BI to open a new facility that will serve the immigration requirements of foreigners based there.

            He disclosed that initially the office will provide visa extension services to foreign tourists in the area.
