Annual report of aliens begins |

Foreigners have been trooping by the hundreds to the main building of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Manila to make their annual report which started last Jan. 2. BI Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. advised aliens to avoid the deadline rush and report early to any of the BI field and satellite offices nationwide.
The Alien Registration Act of 1950 requires foreigners staying in the Philippines to report to the BI within the first 60 days of every calendar year. David reiterated that aliens who fail to make the annual report will be meted administrative fines and could face deportation proceedings. |

5 Beirut-bound Pinays barred at NAIA |

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) warned prospective overseas Filipino workers against being recruited by syndicates that sends undocumented workers to Lebanon despite the lifting of the ban on the deployment of OFWs to the said country. BI Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. issued the warning upon learning that immigration officers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) recently barred from leaving the country five Filipinas bound for Beirut, Lebanon. The women disguised themselves as tourists but confessed they would proceed to Lebanon to work. Last November, the government announced that it lifted the ban on the deployment of OFWs to Lebanon where the ban was in effect since 2006. |

BI earned P2.7-B in 2012; posts 14% rise in income |

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) said yesterday that it raised more than P2.7 billion for the government in 2012 as it reported that its revenue last year shot up by more than 14 percent compared to 2011. BI Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. disclosed that the bureau’s collection last year totaled P2.728 billion, which is P393-million higher than the P2.334 billion the agency earned a year ago. David also said that the BI overshot its P2.5-billion income target last year by almost five percent or more than P114 million. The BI chief attributed the sharp rise in income to the large number of foreigners who entered the country last year. |

Foreign tourists want to stay longer in RP - BI |

Despite negative travel advisories and the country’s raging dispute with China over islands in the West Philippine Sea, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported that many foreign tourists who visited the country in 2012 opted to stay here longer or beyond the period of their visa. BI Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. disclosed that from January to December last year the BI visa extension office processed and approved a total of 172,055 applications for extension of stay by foreign tourists. David said the number of approved visa extensions in 2012 was 13-percent higher than the 151,913 applications for extension of stay the bureau approved in 2011. “Our country remains a favorite tourist destination that many foreign visitors are opting to stay here longer not only for vacation or to visit our tourist attractions but also to explore business and investment opportunities,” the BI chief said. |

30,000 ex-Pinoys became dual citizens in 2012 |

More than 30,000 former Filipinos reacquired last year their Philippine citizenship under the so-called dual citizenship law, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said.
BI Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. disclosed that the bureau in 2012 processed a total of 30,362 applications for dual citizenship under Republic Act 9225 or the Citizenship Retention and Reacquisition Act of 2003. Under Republic Act 9225, also known as the citizenship retention and reacquisition act of 2003, natural-born Filipinos who became naturalized citizens of other countries are deemed not to have lost their citizenship by taking the required oath of allegiance to the Philippine republic. David said of the total number of dual citizens processed last year, 5,564 filed their petitions at the BI main office in Manila while the rest applied at the various Philippine consulates abroad. |
